Meet Mike!
Owner of Heartwood Tree & Timber and Certified Arborist serving Mid- Michigan and the Greater Lansing area.
His journey with trees and forestry began in 2010 with the US Forest Service as a firefighter and sawyer. While he has hung up wildland fire gear, he couldn't stay away from the outdoors for long. After completing his MBA and diving into business development and team leadership, he decided to combine his experience with his passion for tree care- and that's how Heartwood Tree & Timber was born. Now he gets to do what he loves every day: help people take care of their trees the right way.
Heartwood Tree & Timber is a company rooted in safety and professionalism. Whether its pruning, removals or long-term tree health, our goal is to offer top-tier, honest tree care you can count on!

Family-Owned. Community-Focused.
Heartwood Tree & Timber is more than just a business—it's a family endeavor built on trust, hard work, and commitment to serving our community the right way.
When you hire Heartwood, you're not hiring a large corporation focused on volume; you’re partnering with a local family-owned business that takes pride in every project we complete. Our name, our reputation, and our values are reflected in every tree we prune, every removal we perform, and every customer we serve.
As homeowners ourselves, we understand that inviting someone onto your property requires trust. That's why we approach every job with the same care, professionalism, and attention to detail that we would expect on our own property. We believe in honest recommendations, clear communication, and doing what's right—even when nobody is watching.
Our goal isn't simply to complete a job. It's to build lasting relationships with the people and communities we serve. We are grateful for every customer who chooses Heartwood, and we never take that trust for granted. Everything we do at Heartwood is guided by a simple question: If this were our own home, would we be happy with the work being done?
Thank you for supporting a local, family-owned business. We look forward to serving your family for years to come.
Meet Our Team
Eric
Eric came to Heartwood with over 10 years of industry experience. He grew up in California and developed a love for the outdoors at an early age. After high school, he joined the California Conservation Corps in Lake Tahoe in 2013, where he worked on forest management and fire-fuel reduction projects throughout the region. That experience sparked a passion for working outdoors and set him on a career path in the tree care industry.
Over the years, Eric has gained experience in several areas of arboriculture, including utility vegetation management with PG&E, where he inspected trees and managed vegetation near power infrastructure. In 2017, he transitioned into residential tree care, specializing in tree climbing, pruning, and removals.
Eric enjoys the combination of physical work, problem-solving, and teamwork that tree work requires. He appreciates that every tree and every property presents unique challenges, creating opportunities to learn and improve every day. His background, attention to detail, and commitment to safe, quality work help ensure customers receive professional tree care they can trust.
In 2025, Eric relocated from California and Nevada to the Lansing area and joined Heartwood. He values the company's commitment to craftsmanship, integrity, and teamwork, and appreciates being part of a crew where everyone takes pride in their work and supports one another.
Outside of work, Eric enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, and exploring the outdoors with his dog.
Sam
Born and raised in Mason, Michigan, Sam is a country boy at heart. He has a deep appreciation for the small-town values and strong work ethic that shaped him growing up, and he remains proud to call Mason home.
Sam's professional background is diverse and well-rounded. After earning a degree in Supply Chain Management from Michigan State University, he began his career in warehouse operations and management. His hands-on upbringing and interest in skilled trades eventually led him in a different direction, working in commercial construction on biogas digester projects across the United States and later in the recycling industry for a scrap metal company.
Those experiences helped develop Sam's strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to adapt to challenging work environments. Ultimately, his passion for hands-on work and desire to be part of a growing team led him to Heartwood.
Working with chainsaws and equipment wasn't new to Sam. Growing up around a hobby farm taught him the value of hard work, self-reliance, and working safely around tools and machinery. Today, he enjoys the variety that tree work offers, knowing that every job presents unique challenges and opportunities to learn.
One of the things Sam appreciates most about Heartwood is the pride the team takes in its work. He enjoys being part of a crew that is committed to doing the job right and delivering quality results for customers.
Outside of work, Sam enjoys collecting and restoring antique tractors, camping, and weightlifting.
Above all, Sam wants customers to know how much he values the trust they place in Heartwood. He believes tree work is a privilege and takes pride in helping customers improve, protect, and enjoy their properties for years to come.
Noah
Noah has been working in the tree care industry for the past two years. He has always enjoyed being outdoors and has a strong appreciation for nature, making tree work a natural fit for him.
Before joining Heartwood, Noah gained experience in a variety of hands-on trades and industries. His background includes working at a tire shop, residential construction, home remodeling, woodworking, and tree care. These experiences helped him develop a strong work ethic, practical problem-solving skills, and confidence working with tools and equipment.
Noah was introduced to tree work through friends already in the industry and quickly discovered it was something he genuinely enjoyed. He especially enjoys climbing trees and the technical challenges that come with each job. He also takes pride in helping customers address hazardous trees and improve the safety of their properties.
What Noah appreciates most about Heartwood is the team culture. He values working alongside people who support one another, take pride in their work, and are committed to doing the best job possible for every customer.
Outside of work, Noah enjoys fishing, working on cars and trucks, playing video games, and spending time outdoors whenever he can.
Noah wants customers to know that he genuinely enjoys what he does. Whether he's climbing, pruning, or helping remove a hazardous tree, he takes pride in working safely, protecting customers' properties, and delivering quality results.
